Dr. Mallios is the Executive Director of the Honors College, beginning in July 2020. He is an associate professor in the English department, where he has taught since 2001. He also teaches and tutors in the Goucher Prison Education Partnership.

Prior to his current position in Honors, Mallios directed the Honors Humanities Program from 2007-2010 and was a faculty mentor in the Gemstone Honors Program from 2011-2014. A recipient of numerous awards for his scholarship, teaching, and mentorship, Mallios specializes in modern American literature, history, politics, and law as well as the reception of global literatures in the U.S. He is the author and editor of many books and articles, including the prize-winning monograph Our Conrad: Constituting American Modernity, and on subjects including multiethnic U.S. literatures, reparations, the U.S. Constitution, digital studies and computational analytics applied to literature, the modern novel, and modern American fiction. He received his Ph.D. in literature from Stanford, a J.D. and M.A. from the University of Chicago, and an A.B. in English and economics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Traci L.M. Dula is the associate director of the Honors College for administration and operations. Dr. Dula is also a two-time Terp (B.A. and Ph.D.) and a Terp mom.


She received her M.Ed. from the University of Vermont in higher education and student affairs. Dr. Dula has been with the Honors College for over twenty-five years serving it and the campus community in many capacities. Currently, she is responsible for academic policy, Honors Option contracts, and scholarships for continuing students such as the Honors Research Grant, and major events such as the Honors College Citation Ceremony. Dr. Dula works closely with our departmental honors program directors and student organizations, the Black Honors Caucus; the the WEB Du Bois Honor Society, and the Student Programming Council. Dr. Dula’s research interest is the history of higher education including race, equity and access; the history of HBCUs (historically Black Colleges and Universities); collegiate honors education; and the contemporary experiences of underrepresented collegians in honors programs within U.S. higher education institutions. The mother of her own three college students, she enjoys working with collegians, and serving in her church and community. She is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

STEPHAN BLATTI

Dr. Blatti is the Director of University Honors and the Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives of the Honors College. He is an Affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy.

Before coming to Maryland, Blatti was the Chair and Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Memphis. He previously held appointments at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Blatti’s primary area of research is metaphysics—specifically, the problem of personal identity—though his work extends to related topics in philosophical psychology, in philosophy of biology, and at the intersection of metaphysics and ethics. The author and editor of numerous books, journal issues, and articles, Blatti received his D.Phil and B.Phil from Oxford University and his BA (with Honors!) from Ohio State University.

Dr. Lang has been the Associate Director for Admissions for the Honors College since 2019. Prior to joining the Honors College, she was the Assistant Director of Admissions for the School of Music at the University of Maryland.



Currently, Dr. Lang leads the Honors admission and Banneker-Key scholarship processes and is the advisor to the Banneker-Key Community Council (BKCC). She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music from the University of Maryland, and her Bachelor of Music from Indiana University. Dr. Lang’s primary instrument is the French horn. Her dissertation is titled "Works for Horn by American Women Composers."

Rebecca Forbes is a business manager for the Honors College, Gemstone, University Honors, and Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students programs. She manages financial/PHR operations, and advises on UMD policies and procedures related to administrative services in the department.

She is also a volunteer adviser for one of the UMD student organizations. Previously, she was a business manager for the Division of Information Technology, and a program management specialist for AGNR Information and Education Technology. She projects to obtain her MBA from the University of Maryland Global Campus in December 2020. She obtained her B.S. in Information and Management Systems, Web Programing certificate, and completion of fifteen credits of accounting courses from the same University.

Ms. Smith joined the Honors College in fall 2019. She organizes outreach and recruiting activities for the Honors College including overseeing the Honors Ambassadors student-run organization that hosts prospective student shadow visits, the Banneker-Key interview days, and supporting all Honors admission processes.

Before coming to UMD, Chantelle served as the Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and prior to that, she served in the United States Army National Guard. Chantelle received her M.S. in Management from UMGC, B.S. in Psychology from Old Dominion University, and her Business Analytics Certificate from UMGC.

Kate Spanos serves as the Assistant Director of Communications for the Honors College. She is also a faculty fellow with the Honors Humanities program.

Dr. Spanos directs and implements the public representation of the Honors College in print and digital media. In addition, she is responsible for storytelling and the Honors College website. She is also a dancer and dance scholar with a Ph.D. from UMD's School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. She has studied dance in Ireland, Brazil, and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. She is also co-founder and board president of EducArte, an arts education non-profit based in College Park. www.thekatespanos.com
